Bookmarks.com – Smart Strategic Purchase
At today’s Snapnames Live Auction at Domainfest, Lonnie Borck was the winning bidder for Bookmarks.com, purchasing it for $310,000. This is a fantastic domain name, and it is a great purchase to incorporate with his netRocket.com website, a bookmark scheduling service.
Bookmarks.com is the category killer domain name for netRocket’s vertical, and it was a smart purchase. Not only will this help drive targeted traffic to netRocket, it is also a nice defensive purchase, as it prevents another upstart company from owning the category.

Wow, that’s a great purchase. I wouldn’t be surprised if they decide to change their name to Bookmarks.com.

This will be a really good one to watch. He’s in a market with some very large, well established competition, and his service doesn’t seem to have built up much market share. If buying Bookmarks.com helps him get significant marketshare, it will be an example that domainers can point to when trying to prove the point about “category killer domain name(s)”.

Color me skeptical. Current leaders in the social bookmarking space:
del.icio.us
furl.net
Two god-awful domain names. I’m not convinced that the name of a website matters 1% as much as the functionality of the website.

Definitely a great domain but I’d be very hesitant to use it as a primary name given the content of the singular version: bookmark.com

Amazing Purchase!!
This has the true potential to push them to the top of the heap.
Bookmarks.com will absolutely make them the #1 in this category

I’ve been keeping an eye on this arena for a while and I’ve seen netRocket garner some solid praise early on. There’s a lot of promise to what this crowd is doing and it will certainly be interesting to see how this domain purchase comes into play. It looks like they are very forward thinking so I wouldn’t be surprised if they climb the ladder quickly.

This is an important signal.
This represens a move back to common sense – descriptive and generic domain name where the domain name explains the site’s purpose.
Hopefully this is a sign that the Web 2.0 silliness with the funky fonts and the cool, crazy, meaningless, seemingly misspelled, and downright immature domain names should be waning. If I can’t recall your domain name and I can’t spell your domain name and if your domain name has no meaning and you have no real brand – how can I become a repeat vistor? how can I tell a friend or someone on the street how to find you? Simple. I can’t.
Well done Bookmarks.com

I like your analogy AJ. In the music business we use to say “if you can’t whistle the hook…forget about it”. Keep it simple and reach the masses.

You bookmark the page, same way that 95% of the internet population remembers sites they want to continue to visit.
