Do You Own Category Defining .com Domain Names?
Rick Schwartz has been discussing the requirements to be eligible to participate in his new JointVentures.com venture. When you look at them as a unit, it’s essentially category defining .com domain names that are eligible.
Here are the requirements that Rick listed:
- Must be a dot com.
- Must clearly state & define the product or service being sold.
- Must be easy to pronounce & therefore pass the radio test.
- Must not be longer than necessary, the shorter the better.
- Must be about a product or service that is in demand & being searched for.
- Must be easy to remember, in fact it must be a no brainer to remember.
- Must be a domain a business could be built on.
I don’t know whether some people don’t understand what a “category defining” domain name is, or if they are hoping for the best when they submit them, but I am wondering what category defining .com domain names you own. If you own any and they are for sale, I welcome you to mention that, too.
In case you’re wondering, here are a few of the category defining domain names my company owns right now: ContactManagement.com, BrandManagement.com, EventPlanner.com, HomeStorage.com, and DogWalker.com.

We own SocialCasino.com
It is a next big thing in gambling.
Social-Casino is a new emerging category and many casino with social in their name are coming online these days. We have been contacted so many times for selling the domain but we want a lease and/or joint venture. If we have to sell, it will be multi-million sale in the mid to high double digit millions.
But as per Rick S, it is not a category in the phone book

Closest I can get is with marketenabler.com. Also, patrollers.org is quite defining imho albeit not that searched for.
November 24th, 2012 at 2:05 pm
Elliot Silver
I don’t think those would work.
November 24th, 2012 at 2:06 pm
Viljami
Appreciate your feedback. It seems I have a lot to learn. Still, not sure why marketenabler.com wouldn’t count. In terms of exact search volume it comes pretty close to ‘brand management’ and is over three times as much as ‘contact management’.
And no, definitely not saying it’s better than those in anyway, just comparing.(And wondering.)

PunchBowls.com
They are for sale.

I don’t think they meet these requirements:

- Must be a domain a business could be built on.

Domain Name: PizzaStickers.com
Pizza delivery boxes can be used as a medium of advertisement to promote businesses. The respective ad sticker(s) can be put on the boxes and delivered to the customers. For instance, if you had a flower store, your ad could be placed on the pizza delivery boxes. The pizza delivery boxes go directly into homes, workplaces or a parties of a large number of people. Hence they form a very good medium to reach out to a large number of potential customers. As many stickers can be sold as the number of pizzas.

Would you consider ParkingGames.com to be a category defining domain? That’s my pride and joy that I have finally purchased after working up to it for years now.
November 24th, 2012 at 6:08 pm
Bill
I don’t know if it’s a category killer but it’s the fastest growing food producing sector in the world. Producing about half of the seafood eaten worldwide and growing about 9 percent per year.
Plus governments and business around the world are investing millions of dollars yearly to advance it.
In addition to the food side of this niche name it also includes ornamental fish, aquariums and anything grown in water.
Aquaculture.com

Obviously parking games isn’t a big as something like OnlineGames.com or something, but to say I don’t get it? No category defining online gaming domains would be found in the yellow pages.
Parking games is a category of online games that ~450,000 people a month are searching for. I feel the $55k price tag was well worth it…

Plungers.com is actually a good generic doamin, albeit ‘toilet plunger’ has better exact match searches per month.
I’m sure Plungers.com can be developed into a profitable website, or flipped for profit. Most people search for the exact name. It is easy to remember.

I don’t agree… you can certainly find an event planner and a dog walker in the phone book.
Which of these bullets below do EventPlanner.com and DogWalker.com not meet?
Must be a dot com.
Must clearly state & define the product or service being sold.
Must be easy to pronounce & therefore pass the radio test.
Must not be longer than necessary, the shorter the better.
Must be about a product or service that is in demand & being searched for.
Must be easy to remember, in fact it must be a no brainer to remember.
Must be a domain a business could be built on.
November 24th, 2012 at 9:34 pm
Pearlshark
Hi Elliot, they’re very good names, but I wouldn’t think that they receive all that much type-in traffic on their own. Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.
The basic generic term is “EventPlanning.”
November 24th, 2012 at 9:58 pm
Elliot Silver
20% of the traffic to DogWalker.com is type in (over 10k/month total).
November 24th, 2012 at 9:59 pm

“Home Storage” produces 1,000 exact match searches per month.
I’m sure Elliot owns many domains that produce much higher searches than 1,000. i.e. Burbank.com, Lowell.com,

Like I said before, just because a name isn’t category defining or doesn’t meet certain criteria, doesn’t mean it’s bad. It simply means it doesn’t match a certain set of criteria.
November 24th, 2012 at 9:53 pm

This post is asking if anyone owns category defining domains. Not necessarily ones that would pass Rick’s criteria.
November 24th, 2012 at 9:39 pm
Pearlshark
Well, if that’s what’s being asked then everyone would own a “category-defining” name then, wouldn’t they? It just depends on how big the category is. As we can see in the comments, most of the “categories” that are being represented are too small.

I have tried to follow the advice of Frank Schilling regarding the value of category defining domain names and their defining properties. Below are some examples of domain names purchased at registration cost:

RomanticBistro.com
DentalOfficeSearch.com
FrameBuildings.com
GumStimulators.com
WaffleMixes.com

Thanks much. I am thinking that your names do better in term of ease-of-spelling. However, my logic is that people who are dealing with the problem and are seeking help probably know how to spell the condition by now.

Wow, did not know that these would get all those dislikes. Kind of the Lord of the flies on here, but I’m Not discouraged.
I’ve had my successes doing this and am
happy with this as a hobby,
but likely won’t post anything again here. Seems that tearing down someones efforts is more important then constructive criticism. Good luck all.

Picking your partners in life is one of the biggest decisions you can make. A lot of people just don’t want to JV with Rick Schwartz.
As far as the names posted here, it does offer some harsh perspective on just how few people really do own the most desirable domain names and how the rest of everyone else is so terribly clueless of where they really stand in the domain ecosystem.

regarding FutureDarshan.com, you obviously don’t know the connotations of darshan. In contrast to your claim, your domain name is terrible for astrology or future prediction. I don’t think this domain name is good for anything. The name is incoherent and inconsistent in so many ways I could almost call it an oxymoron.

Elliot,
Thank you. I just started my monday morning off with a good laugh as I sifted through all the rubbish people have posted. 95% of “domainers” have blinders on and are completely oblivious to the crap they own.
These types of posts are my favorite because 1. I get to see the crap come out of the woodwork and 2. get to see how PROUD people are of the crap (the finniest part to me)
Anyways, thanks for the laugh.

Uhg I couldnt read anymore past the halfway mark of comments. In what way do “domainers” listing names that are not relevant in any copacity to what the subject is?

Re:Do You Own Category Defining .com Domain Names?
Criteria::
—————————
Must be a dot com.
Must clearly state & define the product or service being sold.
Must be easy to pronounce & therefore pass the radio test.
Must not be longer than necessary, the shorter the better.
Must be about a product or service that is in demand & being searched for.
Must be easy to remember, in fact it must be a no brainer to remember.
Must be a domain a business could be built on.

I think it’s pretty clear at this point that you aren’t sharing category defining domain names but are looking for an outlet to post other names. I recommend posting them elsewhere since there are many people subscribing to this thread every time someone posts, and it’s probably annoying them by now.
