I just faced this situation y'day and today I see your post. I work in a very big MNC which people use everyday. An upcoming conf. next month and our team went about designing the site for promotional purposes and decided on a .in domain name. So far so good.

In the team meeting, I asked the person incharge, what happens to the dot com of the website and he is like why do v need that. I was totally shocked. I told him if u dont reg. the dotcom version, I will reg. it and then forward it to dot in and see how many type in dot com directly.

Finally, I was able to convince him and the team and they are going to reg. both the .in and .com version.

Elliot,

If you don't mind a link to one of my domains, my example is PERFECT to illustrate your point.

Before I give the example, please know that I had the .com in 2004 and they developed the .org in 2008 so they developed the .org without having the .com.

Worse, they didn't know or care who had the .com. BIG mistake!

Check out http://HavanaTimes.org . This is a propaganda tool of the Cuban government. I have http://HavanaTimes.com which points to a page at our Cuba news site and provides proof that the owners are tied to the Cuban government yet they refuse to acknowledge that fact in their About Us section.

So, I use the .com version to expose the Communist propaganda at the .org and am proud of it.
