Google Alerts are great, especially for sourcing blog posts (although not always their own Blogspot blogs, strangely) and although their Google News service is superb, they don't pick up on all sources - other aggregators such as Moreover or NewsNow often index sites which Google doesn't.

Domain news/blogs/articles feed sites which try to 'cover all bases' are best for web-based live updates. This is what I've tried to do with my own domain news & auction listing sites: http://domaindizzy.com and http://domaindizzy.com/auctions/
